Defining Moments*
(Baptism of the Lord)

4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. ... 11And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

We are all tattooed in our cradles
with the beliefs of our tribe;
the record may seem superficial,
but it is indelible.

It was a cold morning for skating lessons on the lake!

It was a chilly morning to walk, too!

Neither genius, fame, nor love
show the greatness of the soul.
Only kindness can do that.

* "On the first week of the Season after the Epiphany we traditionally focus on the story of Jesus' baptism. Each of the gospels includes this story, and marks the baptism as a "defining moment" that signals the beginning of Jesus' public ministry.

"'I have baptized you with water," John said, "but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.' In other words, John asked for a promise to change while Jesus would give the power to change.

"The risk is, that after accepting and acknowledging the God within, the Holy Spirit, God might ask us, just as he asked Jesus, to step out into some new form of ministry.  And then what would we do?"
