Welcoming
[Jesus said:] "Whoever welcomes you
welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever
welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward;
and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will
receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water
to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple — truly I tell you, none
of these will lose their reward."
Matthew 10:40-42

Several of Carl Bloch’s altar pieces and paintings were on
exhibit at the BYU Museum of Art in 2011:
What
is it about the religious paintings of this Danish artist that is so appealing
to Christians around the world? Dawn Pheysey, curator of religious art at the
BYU Museum of Art, explained that a thoughtful study of Bloch’s works suggests
several distinctive qualities that make his images so captivating.
“Certainly his academic training at the Royal
Danish Academy of Fine Arts and his studies in Italy were pivotal in his
development as a significant painter of religious and historical paintings. His
careful observation and attention to detail provided the qualities necessary to
make him a great genre and portrait painter,” Pheysey said. “But it was his
tender and sensitive soul that defined his ability to portray the plights of
others with kind consideration, and his deep-seated faith that enabled him to
render compelling images of the Savior with devotion and love.”
The Church is to be a community of faith,
entrusting itself to God alone,
even at the risk of losing its life.

We must welcome the future,
remembering that soon it will be the past;
and we must respect the past,
remembering that it was once all
that was humanly possible.

Last
Sunday, CV (Carolyn Martyn) and Joan Brown
had
a wonderful 70th birthday party for Nancy Priest!
Nancy

Matt
was a former student of Nancy’s. When he was 16 he was Nancy’s lead
in “Fiddler on the Roof"
at
George Washington High School. He sang “If I Were a Rich Man”
beautifully!
Parnell
(has his own band. He used to teach with Nancy.) had some
very
special and humorous words for Nancy, CV, and Gary, CV’s husband.
I
visited Sylvia Brockner at Elk Run Retirement Center on Tuesday
and
took a picture out her window of a mule deer who was helping himself to her
bird feeder.
A
territorial red-winged blackbird was scolding him soundly.
He
almost emptied the bird feeder.

In a world that can be hard and scary sometimes, it is
tempting to think of the church as a hideout, the place where those of us who
know the secret password can gather to celebrate our good fortune. As we
repeat our favorite stories and eat the food that has been prepared for us, it
is tempting to think of ourselves as consumers of God’s love, chosen people who
have been given more good gifts than we can open at one sitting: healing,
forgiveness, restoration, resurrection. Then one day the Holy Spirit
comes knocking at the door, disturbing our members-only meeting and reminding
us that it is time to share.
