The Wise and Foolish Virgins

Jesus said, “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

The Fifth Wise Virgin

SCHONGAUER, Martin

before 1483

copper-plate engraving

Szepmuveszeti Muzeum

The series consists of ten sheets.  Foolish virgins are depicted with their lamps directed downwards.  In the collection of the Pushkin Fine Arts Museum there are two sheets from this series.

He [Schongauer] established the system of depicting volume by means of cross-hatching (lines in two directions) which was further developed by Dürer, and was the first engraver to curve parallel lines, probably by rotating the plate against a steady burin. He also developed a burin technique producing deeper lines on the plate, which meant that more impressions could be taken before the plate became worn.

Jeanne Gibbard and I laughed a lot as we watched this production

at the Arvada Center for the Arts.

Driving to Golden on Monday, I stopped on the Genesee bridge to take a picture

of the beautiful low hanging cloud in the valley.

This is looking west toward the mountains.

Then I turned east from the same spot and took a picture

of the cloud bank into which I was descending toward Denver.

Matt, Corynn, Courtney, and Matt McLaurin Jr. were our speakers

at Rotary Friday morning.  Matt recently retired after 25 years as an officer

in the U.S. Navy and each family member helped us to understand

what it is like to serve in the military.

Having formerly taught for the Department of Defense Schools

overseas for many years, I particulary appreciated the kids’ comments about

their experiences and the importance of a close-knit family.

After Rotary, we helped pack Soldier Boxes to be sent to soldiers overseas.

Did you know …

The entire Denver International Airport is twice the size of Manhattan?

Encompassing 53 square miles (137.8 square kilometers) of land, DEN is twice the size of Manhattan Island, and is larger than the city boundaries of Boston, Miami, or San Francisco. DEN is the largest airport site in North America and the second-largest in the world.
